Meet Shep… he is the owner and cheesemaker at Gunn’s Hill Artisan Cheese located in Oxford County. He saw some cheese being made and he said “I want to do that” and so he did. And we are very glad he did!
In 2014 he won the Young Entrepreneur Award from the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC). This $100,000 award allowed him to add 2,000 square-feet of climate-controlled curing and aging rooms as you see in the photo above. (The Financial Post wrote an excellent article just after his win.)
Why do we love Gunn’s Hill Artisan Cheese? Well, the cheese is really really good. And consistently good. They make a variety of cheeses but they spend half of their time focused on one cheese, Five Brothers. The commitment to quality and the skill of cheesemaking really shows not only in their cheese but also in how they manage their business.
The Globe and Mail reviewed Gunn’s Hill Artisan Cheese in 2013. The article really captures the success and progress of Gunn’s Hill. I would highly recommend you read it to fully appreciate the cheese you are eating.
We are featuring Gunn’s Hill in September because we want to support this incredible cheesemaker. Look for his cheeses at your local market, cheese shop or fine food store and please buy them – you won’t be disappointed!
